“Strident, shocking, imperious and beautiful, this was a riveting performance”was how Anna Picard described Ruth’s Wigmore Hall debut in the Independent on Sunday.

Violinist Ruth Palmer brings glamour and engagement to the concert stage and is fast developing an international reputation for her intense physical performances, deeply sonorous sound and championing of new music. She won the Young British Classical Performer 2007 awardat the Classical BRITs.

Ruth’s debut CD with the Philharmonia Orchestra was released to huge critical acclaim worldwide and the Philharmonia Orchestra subsequently invited Ruth to tour the Prokofiev Concerto with them. “Palmer’s bow has a demonic edge and her tone is so sweatily intense that one cannot turn away” wrote Rick Jones in The Times and International Record Review said . “If I hear a greater record of Shostakovich’s music this year, I shall be astonished” an opinion echoed by Andrew Clements in the Guardian, and also Classic FM magazine who made it January 2007 CD of the month.

Past performances include: the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, Munich Opera House, a week of recitals at the Edinburgh Festival as a winner of the Royal Over-Seas League competition, Chi Mei Culture Foundation of Taiwan, regular performances at the Wigmore Hall, performances with the English Chamber Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and performances at: The Royal Opera House, Cheltenham International Festival of Music, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Teatro Albeniz Madrid, Snape Maltings, Sadlers Wells London, Lyceum Sheffield and Theater Royal Brighton.  She appears regularly on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, Classic FM radio and Classic FM TV.

Ruth has worked frequently with some of Britain’s leading choreographers and dancers. In 2004/5 she toured as a soloist with Rambert Dance Company performing to over 50,000 people around the country to critical acclaim. “Brilliant Young Violinist” (Financial Times) and “it was sometimes a struggle to concentrate on the dance when the violinist was so compelling” (Sunday Telegraph).

Prizes have included 2nd and 3rd Prizes at the Premio Sassari International Violin Competition, The RAM “Roth Prize’, The RAM Lesley Alexander Award for excellence in violin playing, the ‘Star’ award from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, awards from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, the Myra Hess Trust, the Emanuel Hurwitz award from the Philharmonia Orchestra/Martin Musical Scholarship Fund and an Allcard Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

As a student at Royal College of Music Ruth’s teacher was Dr. Felix Andrievsky.  In 2005 Ruth was made the first ever recipient of the prestigious Ritterman Junior Fellowship at the RCM, having previously been the Mills Williams Junior Fellow in 2004.
